The Secrets for Celebrating ‘80’ Years of Marriage

Marriage longevity is a multifaceted topic that encompasses emotional, social, and health-related aspects. By fostering friendship, maintaining open communication, and prioritizing the quality of the relationship, couples can enhance their chances of enjoying a long and fulfilling marriage. Understanding these dynamics can provide valuable insights for those looking to strengthen their own relationships.

The work…! Active and effective communication and a strong commitment to resolving conflicts are crucial for maintaining a long-lasting marriage. Couples who prioritize their relationship and work together to overcome challenges tend to have more successful marriages.

What do these long-lasting bonds have in common? A durable alliance is indispensable for a successful nuptial. Part of the building blocks of a healthy home is emphasizing the goal of cultivating a deep and trust filled attachment to your spouse. This connection can help couples navigate challenges together and nurture a supportive environment.

I’ve located accounts of (9) couples married for over (80) years. I am CONFIDENT there are more. This bold statement should leave the reader to presume that each of those people are over 100 years of age. True.

Here are a couple of those instances.

There have been several instances and reports of people celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary while one or both of them are turning 100 years old.

Notable examples include:

  • Vernon and Ruth Mize, a Kentucky couple, celebrated their 80th anniversary in July 2024 as they both approached their 100th birthdays.

  •  In May 2024, a couple from New York City celebrated 80 years of marriage. Anthony Aquaro, 103, and his wife Gloria, 100, credited their strong love for their longevity.

  • In July 2022, a couple from Nova Scotia, Canada, both aged 100, celebrated their 80th anniversary. Charlie and Annie Muise credited staying true to each other for their long marriage.

  •  Another couple, Jim and Margaret St. Clair, marked their 80th anniversary in June 2025, with Margaret being 100 years old. They hail from Pennsylvania.

  • Anna and Albert Squila: While the snippet mentions both turning 100, they celebrated 81 years of marriage in March 2024, making them a slightly different example of long-lived marital bliss.

While no centenarian couple from Oklahoma married for exactly 80 years has been specifically identified, the state has been home to other famously long-married couples.

Reports of couples celebrating 80-year anniversaries are extremely rare, but they do happen occasionally around the world.

I have to grant some honorable mentions for Oklahoma's longest-married couples.

  • In 2022, Orvel and Virginia Sherrill of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, were named "America's Longest Married Couple" by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a faith-based nonprofit. The Sherrills were married on July 3, 1942, and had been married for 80 years at the time they received the honor

  • Other recently celebrated 80-year anniversaries in August 2025, a couple in southwestern Oklahoma was reported to have celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary.

  • In May 2024, a couple from New York City celebrated 80 years of marriage. Anthony Aquaro, 103, and his wife Gloria, 100, credited their strong love for their longevity.
In July 2022, a couple from Nova Scotia, Canada, both aged 100, celebrated their 80th anniversary. Charlie and Annie Muise credited staying true to each other for their long marriage.

If you are still fighting to stay married, may your nuptials be strengthened and GOD rests you in His care, for honoring His Covenant Way.

We at Fostering Healthy Communities are praying and rooting for you!

I am not certain if I will live to be married for 80 years, but I am trying.
