Deliverance is More Than Physical. It is Freedom and Healing.
Have you given consideration that GOD's deliverance does not always mean freedom and healing?
You don’t have to agree with that question. I am asking you to just consider it. All the considerable Scripture (and the conjoining) research does confirm this curious question in several ways.
“Deliverance…” What does it actually mean, according to Scripture? Across the Biblical description and landscape, deliverance is far broader than the physical release or immediate healing. It often includes these…
The Almighty One (El Shaddai) rescues us from spiritual bondage
A change takes place in our status or our current identity
GOD’s Presence meets us in the suffering
The Holy One gives His Strength to endure or persevere
Redemption that unfolds over time, ONLY comes from Him (not always instantaneously)
Those things are not the only pieces that are formed through the aftermath. GOD is NOT limited! Many misunderstand deliverance as only dramatic escape or instant healing, but Scripture paints a more holistic picture, including emotional and spiritual renewal that may come gradually.
NOTE: Biblical teaching shows that our rescue and liberation (deliverance) frequently target spiritual captivity, not our physical conditions. Correct? Yeshua Himself proclaimed “freedom” primarily as release from sin and spiritual oppression—not always from earthly troubles. I am confident that reread was a reminding shock for some whose thoughts are usually thinking on limbs growing and demons being cast out. While these things have and do take place, that is not to 100% definition of this term. Let those who have spiritual ears, “hear”.
Do you recall when Paul mentioned this same stuff when he described freedom as liberation from “the law of sin and death,” which is an internal transformation, not outward escape.
NOTE: Any and every person can be “delivered” while still sick, still imprisoned, or still suffering externally. That is a true statement.
We know that deliverance can be an immediate action. I was liberated from the desire for bad language (though already minimal), the taste for alcoholic beverages, and other ungodly desires the VERY moment I surrendered my life to Jesus. All of our history has shown us that deliverance is often gradual. It comes in the manner of emotional, internal, and relational—not always a dramatic miracle.
Many assume deliverance equals instant relief, but this is a misconception. Scripture includes slow, non-sensational forms of healing, restoration, and transformation as well. Yes, instantaneous ones as well.
In other words:
GOD may deliver from fear while the illness remains.
GOD may deliver from bitterness while the situation is unchanged.
GOD may deliver someone through suffering, not from it.
Deliverance (not physical healing) can mean strength to endure the situation. The entirety of the Psalms repeatedly shows how GOD is frequently delivering His people, while in their troubles, not always from them. Do you recall is declaration? “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted… He delivers them from all their troubles,” but the passage makes clear that many troubles persist while GOD sustains the person in them.
This type of deliverance sure does resemble that…
GOD, your Help, is fighting for you spiritually
GOD, your Help, is carrying you emotionally
GOD, your Help, is transforming you inwardly
GOD, your Help, is keeping you faithful when life does not change
This is exactly the encouraging framework of Isaiah’s message. Judah was not instantly freed from their chaos (they were rather rebellious and messy), yet GOD preserved a remnant and promised future restoration.
The entire log of 66 Books points to the fact that deliverance often aims at OUR Holiness, not our comfort. Are you able and willing to “amen” that?
Your repentance and will to realign with GOD’s will to restore a busted relationship could go a long way to bring on that liberation you desire.
It is more about who you become in GOD, not simply (only) what GOD removes from your life. Even Israel’s physical deliverance from Egypt was ultimately about their identity, His Covenant with them, and transformation. It was NOT merely freedom from slavery.
Shall we slip into something a bit more appealing to some, yet it reaches across the aisle of the TANAKH and Brit Chadasha. It is the stuff the life of Yeshua showed those who cared to watch. His service to mankind [Judah, Decapolis and those distance travelers from Syria] were both types/forms of deliverance.
Yes, without a doubt, Jesus healed and freed people physically; but He also proclaimed deliverance in the form of these…
…forgiveness
…spiritual sight
…release from guilt
…new identity
…freedom from demonic influence
...liberation from fear
Not every healed person stayed healed. Not every delivered person had their circumstances changed, but all were spiritually restored according to GOD’s purpose.
Jesus often said: “Go and sin no more” (John 5:14) or “Your faith has made you whole” (Luke 17:19), indicating that healing was tied to a continuing walk with His Father, not just a momentary event.
Here is an interesting situation. Not every liberated person had changed circumstances. Some were freed spiritually but continued to face difficulty:
The Gerasene demoniac wanted to leave with Jesus after being delivered, but Jesus sent him back to his town—same circumstances, new life –Mark 5:18–20
Paul prayed for the “thorn in his flesh” to be removed, but GOD said, “My grace is sufficient for you” –2 Corinthians 12:9
Jesus was crucified on our behalf
Elisha dies of a sickness
Graves are filling up quickly
Our spiritual victories DOES NOT remove the hardship we face.
GOD’s deliverance does not always mean freedom and healing, but it always means GOD is actively rescuing, restoring, and redeeming His people.
Here is my final share, and I hope it adds to your pursuit of wholeness, healing, deliverance, restoration and hope for a faithful life. ALL whom GOD “touched” were spiritually restored in some way. Every encounter with GOD will always have a deeper purpose. The external change was temporary; the spiritual transformation was eternal.
NOTE 1: Healing revealed Jesus’ identity. You can find that assistance in John 9:3
NOTE 2: Deliverance declared His authority. You can find that assistance in —Luke 11:20
NOTE 3: Miracles were signs pointing to Yeshua (Salvation), not ends in themselves. You can find that assistance in —John 20:30–31
